Student leaders advocate the eternal project of building a more perfect union.
The following letter, prepared by leaders of Harvard University’s Democratic student organizations, was posted on Saturday, November 9th to address the results of the 2024 U.S. election.
Dear Members of the Harvard Community,
With Donald Trump's election to a second term in office, many in our community are grappling with profound concerns about our nation's future. As the Democratic Organizations of Harvard University, we find ourselves confronting fundamental questions about our democracy.
We understand that many members of our community are worried about what the next four years will mean for civil liberties, the rule of law, and democratic institutions. We acknowledge the bitter currents of racism and misogyny foaming in the political atmosphere. We recognize the strained capacities to confront these challenges. As Harvard students privileged with exceptional opportunities, we have a special responsibility to answer the call of public service - to use our education and resources in service of our nation and our fellow citizens, to reject raging cynicism, and to manifest strength through our duty.
We also recognize the deeply personal stakes for our entire community – from the uncertainties facing our undocumented, DACA, and international students under shifting immigration policies, to mounting threats to our access to healthcare and reproductive care, to our collective safety in the face of gun violence, to the conservation of our planet amid escalating climate disasters, to the harmful effects of economic inequality. These challenges touch the very core of our lives and futures.
Even in our darkest moments, the torch of democracy must not dim. Our civic faith may be tested, but our resolve to protect and progress our country remains unshaken. As a community, we must support each other while working to preserve and advance the values we hold dear.
We invite you to join us in the days ahead as we chart a path forward together, keeping alive the eternal American project of building a more perfect union.
