Career Field Prior to HBS:
Consultant at Novantas, a consultancy in New York focused on marketing and strategy in the financial services sector.
Position in Grey:
Summer Intern /Strategic Planning
Why did you choose an internship
I had long debated the idea of working in advertising – hoping it would be a field where I could balance my analytical and creative ambitions – and thought the internship would give me an opportunity to test the fit. I was looking to learn from the best, and Grey is not only a top firm but is owned by WPP, a premier marketing communications conglomerate with strong ties to HBS. Interestingly, while many advertising agencies are resistant to hiring MBAs, even as interns, the woman I spoke with at Grey was very interested in what I brought to the table, which made me confident in my decision.
What made you decide on interning in New York?
Who wouldn’t want to intern in New York? I love New York! I grew up on Long Island and went to college at Columbia so I already knew many of the treasures that the city had to offer. Plus, the opportunity to be close to my family and my friends was hard to pass up.
Summarize your internship experience – the good, the bad & the overall.
I truly appreciated the opportunity that my internship offered. In its strategic planning division, Grey has a team of truly talented individuals who took the time to show me many different parts of the business. I was thrilled to have the chance to analyze data using an analytical approach different from the one I had employed in consulting, run a focus group, provide ammunition to the creative teams, and contribute to client presentations. My experiences spanned the client lifecycle from pitching to researching new avenues for an established client to pursue. I also enjoyed the summer intern project, a chance for interns from different divisions and with different levels and types of experiences to come together and try to solve a problem. As amazing as it was, the experience led me to realize that advertising is not the best industry for me. I am now looking for a career on the client side where I can balance strategy with execution. and maybe hire Grey to work for me!
