In the opening day of flag football, there were few surprises except for one big upset. Section New E, who squeaked into the playoffs with a 2-3 record (good for 2nd in their division), upset heavily favored Old B (5-0 in the regular season) by a score of 34-20. QB Joe Gomes lead the offense and WRs Dali Snyder and Laura Hayden combined for three touchdowns. Without Nikki Brewer, OB did not have enough to overcome the NE’s speed advantage.
New J (6-0) continued to rumble as they handily defeated Old E (4-2) by a score 38-12. OE coach Edmund Kim‘s strategy was not good enough to slow NJ. Dave Kreter passed for four touchdowns and caught one. Anne Bercuvich was one of several players to make an interception. NJ continues to put up big points on the board with their creative passing attack and is now considered the new favorite to win it all.
Old F (5-0) advanced with a tough victory against New I (4-2) by a final of 35-20. The lead was never above a touchdown before the final minutes of the game. OF was lead by Thomas Parker who threw for three touchdowns and had some long runs. Without a single dominating receiver, OF utilized Ashraf Haque, Andre Baillergeon, and Mai Nguyen to make scoring plays. On defense, Roberto Young, and Missy Blakely were able to slow NC’s fast paced offense.
Old C (6-0) defeated Old A (4 in the other late game by a score of 33-13. QB John Dickie connected early and often and Sunru Yong‘s speed is undeniable. On defense, Cassy Howell and Krista Pelisari continued to make some big plays.
Last year, the playoffs were dominated by EC sections with only one RC section making it to postseason play. However, this year the RC sections are making a big splash with victories over Old B and Old E. Much thanks to league commissioner Jeff Dinski (OA) for coordinating much of the season.
