Well, let’s just talk basic survival skills here. I mean like that time you overslept and found out Spangler Caf‚ is closed, and you got a tad bit tired of the greasy pizzas at the Grille, what can you do?

If you are one of the lucky few who live in a place with kitchen, don’t worry, you can have food on the table in less than 5 minutes. Just make sure next time you go to Star Market you pick up a few extra things: garlic, scallions, packs of tofu (soft, hard, silken, velvet, plain, flavoured, vanilla, chocolate, whatever), a bottle each of soya sauce and sesame oil. For salt, pepper and sugar, if you’re too cheap to pay $1.39 for a 2-pound pack, I am sure you will find some packets lying around in Spangler.

Okay, the recipe:
 Boil a pot of water
 Put the tofu on a greased plate or bowl and place it inside the pot. Let it steam for 5 minutes.
 On another bowl, splash in some soya sauce (okay if you want exact measurements, say 6 tablespoons)
 Add into it some sugar (2 tablespoons/packets shall we say?)
 Add a dash of pepper and a generous splash of sesame oil.
 Chop up 1-2 cloves of garlic, or a stem of scallion (or both if you want) and add it to the mixture.
 If you want to spice it up, throw in some chilli sauce and white wine (or vinegar).
 To make it even more exotic, try crushed roasted peanuts, curry powder, chopped hard-boiled egg… basically anything you want.
But since I promised this is a 5-minute recipe, I’ll keep things simple.
So, by the time you’ve got everything in and stirred up, your tofu is ready. Just take it out and pour the mixture on it. Voila! You can serve it with rice, noodle or just eat it as it is.
