Dig This!

Perhaps you have noticed the proliferation of volleyballs bouncing around on the Shad Courts on Wednesday nights (hopefully, you weren’t hit by one while peeking in to find a pick-up basketball game). Or maybe you’ve witnessed players engaged in a competitive game of grass doubles out on campus on a sunny day. If so, then it sounds like you’ve had your first glimpse into the world of HBS Volleyball.

Volleyball is a great way to get to know other new students and seasoned students who can help players improve their skills. The HBS Volleyball Club provides a release to the rigors stress of class work through hours of practice and competition. The Volleyball Club is comprised of players with a wide range of skill levels, ranging from former college and AA-level players to intermediate and recreational players. The Volleyball Club welcomes all skill levels: the foremost goal is simply for members to have fun.

The Volleyball Club holds practices and open volleyball hours at least once per week in Shad Hall. The practices allow time for players of all levels to work on specific skills through passing, setting, and spiking drills, as well as engage in scrimmage games. The format allows members to play in a competitive environment with other players of the same ability.

Throughout the year the Volleyball Club travels to various inter-MBA tournaments to compete against other business schools such as Sloan, Wharton, and Kellogg. The tournaments are a great way to play competitive volleyball against different players and to meet students from other business schools around the country.

Last spring, the HBS Volleyball Club sent a team to the Wharton Business School Tournament, where business school teams from around the country traveled to play. The Harvard team swept through regular pool play with ease, entering the playoffs undefeated. The HBS team advanced to the final, but took second place after losing in a close match to the Michigan team, whom they had beaten in two games earlier that day in pool play.

HBS Volleyball anticipates participating in several inter-MBA volleyball tournaments throughout the 2001-2002 academic year, including a return to Philadelphia this spring to crush the other business school teams.
HBS Volleyball is looking forward to hosting its first inter-business school volleyball tournament this fall, and possibly an HBS three-man indoor tournament in the spring.
The HBS Volleyball Club is currently taking signups for new members. For more information about the Volleyball Club, contact one of the officers: Marcus Lo (mlo@mba2002.hbs.edu), Paul Sims (psims@mba2002.hbs.edu), or Carolyn Bockius (cbockius@mba2002.hbs.edu); or visit the Volleyball Club’s website at //sa.hbs.edu/volley.
