Club Meditation

When Claudia Sender approached me and asked it I’d like to go with her and Lisette Chappa Cinzia Rascazzo, Marta Velando and Patrick Arnaud to Club Med in Turks & Caicos for spring break, I didn’t hesitate to give a resounding yes. After months of cases and the cold Boston winter, the thought of a week in the sun in an all-exclusive beach resort couldn’t have sounded better.

The trip began shortly after class ended on Friday. As we had to fly out of JFK, we decided to spend the night at my parent’s home on Long Island. As we drove out of Boston with the snow coming down hard, I couldn’t help but think we were getting out just in time. We made it to Long Island, and the next day was a nice one, and we got off without any problems.

We arrived at Provinciales at night, but the warm air felt terrific as we left the airport. After a short ride to Club Med, we were greeted with luscious fruit drinks and welcomed by “interesting & appealing eye candy” GOs to the resort. This is what we were waiting for. Within a short while, we ran into two other groups that had come down from HBS, which included Cristina Farjallat, Elena Pirondini, Kendra Kretz, Cecily Kovatch, Jamie Herbstman and Marci Walner. Poor Mayya Dabbagh, on crutches after a freakish dancing accident at the Priscilla Ball, got stopped at the airport after getting repeated assurance from the travel agency that she didn’t need a Visa, would join us on Tuesday.

The next morning we awoke to the bright sun of the Caribbean and the sound of waves crashing on the beach. I peeked out of my window and couldn’t believe the beautiful beach that stretched far in the distance. This was going to be a great vacation.

I must admit, at first I was a skeptic about Club Med, but this place was terrific. The plethora of activities included SCUBA diving, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, basketball, volleyball, and aerobics in the pool. Main attractions featured Claudia, Cris and Martha scuba diving with the sharks, Jamie and Cecily in a terrific performance on the sailing regatta and Cris, Cinzia and Jamie being rescued after going too far windsurfing. Almost every night was spent watching a beautiful sunset to some great live music at the beach bar. But the best activities began after the sun went down, with a huge buffet dinner, lots of wine, some entertaining shows and then plenty of drinking and dancing. Of course, we also had to deal with some less pleasant stuff, like a group of 10 guys from Wharton hitting on the Harvard ladies.

The meals were an event upon themselves. By far the favorite item at the meals was the orgasmic white chocolate bread. This delicious treat, which I think Elena would sell her soul for, was one of the highlights of the trip. If anybody needs a business plan, I think importing this stuff could easily pay for your education.
The trip back to Boston came much too quick and was a little bit longer than expected. After a slight delay of 8 hours, we finally got to JFK (depressed with the weather, of course) and drove back to school. At least, the girls’ tan is there to remind us of the great time we’ve had (unfortunately you can only see their faces, I saw them in their bikinis!!!)
